IELTS provides a set of headings and asks you to match each with the paragraph or section it best summarizes. There are more headings than needed. It tests whether you can identify the main idea rather than a supporting detail. Matching Headings is used in both Academic and General Training Reading.
A practical step-by-step method
From LizOn lesson ielts-034: first identify the heading’s meaning, skim strategically for the paragraph’s central point, then eliminate options that describe only an example. The lesson also emphasizes consistent timed practice. Headings are not guaranteed to be in the first or last sentences; read enough context to verify the main idea.
- Survey the headings. Notice the difference between similar options. Underline the words showing the topic or purpose.
- Skim a paragraph for its main idea. Check the opening and closing sentences for clues, but read further when they do not represent the whole paragraph.
- Summarize the paragraph in your own words. Ask: is it explaining a cause, benefit, challenge, change or solution?
- Match meaning, not identical words. A heading may use synonyms or a broader summary of the paragraph.
- Eliminate used choices and revisit difficult paragraphs. Don't spend all your available time on one uncertain heading.
Important: The first or last sentence is a useful clue, not a fixed rule. No sentence position or shortcut guarantees a given percentage of correct answers.

- Choosing a heading just because the same noun appears in both places.
- Matching one interesting example instead of the paragraph's overall message.

- Assuming the opening sentence always gives the full answer.
Matching Headings vs Matching Information
Matching Headings asks for the overall main idea of a paragraph. Matching Information asks where a particular detail, example, explanation or claim appears. These tasks require different reading approaches.
