PTE Summarize Group Discussion: Note-Taking and Summary

The PTE Summarize Group Discussion task asks you to listen to a discussion and orally summarize its main ideas. It was introduced as part of the 2025 test update.

Step-by-step approach

  1. Listen for the shared topic and each speaker's main point, not every word.
  2. Use short notes for agreements, disagreements, reasons and examples.
  3. Organize your summary around the discussion's central issue and the different viewpoints.
  4. Use your own coherent sentences. Do not invent conclusions the speakers did not make.

Try an original example

Practice scenario (original, not a real exam recording): three students discuss online lectures. One values flexibility, another misses classroom interaction, and a third suggests a blended schedule.

Show suggested answer and explanation

The group discussed online lectures. One student emphasized their flexibility, while another preferred face-to-face interaction. The third proposed combining online and in-person classes to balance both benefits.

Common mistakes to avoid

Avoid memorized responses that ignore what the task asks. Focus on accurate comprehension, practice with varied materials and review feedback. Techniques support preparation; they do not guarantee a score or a particular answer.
