IELTS Speaking Anxiety: What to Do When You Freeze
Feeling nervous in IELTS Speaking can affect how clearly you express ideas. Practise recovering from pauses, expanding a simple answer and speaking naturally instead of memorizing speeches.

Before your test
Use timed practice to become familiar with Speaking Parts 1, 2 and 3. Record answers, listen for long pauses and practise reformulating an idea without stopping.
If you cannot think of an answer
Start with a simple relevant point, explain why it matters and add a specific example. You do not need an extraordinary story to communicate clearly.
Part 2 recovery
During preparation, write a few keywords covering the topic and useful supporting details. If you lose your train of thought, return to the main topic and describe an example or consequence.
What to avoid
Avoid learning word-for-word speeches, rushing to fill every brief pause, or making unsupported claims about what an examiner expects. Assess progress using the official Speaking criteria.
