TRUE: প্রশ্নের বক্তব্য passage-এর তথ্যের সঙ্গে মিলে যায়। FALSE: passage-এ বিপরীত তথ্য আছে। NOT GIVEN: বক্তব্যটি সত্য না মিথ্যা, passage থেকে নিশ্চিত হওয়া যায় না।

What exactly are you being tested on?
FALSE
The passage directly disagrees with the statement.
NOT GIVEN
The passage neither confirms nor contradicts the statement.
This is an information question. Yes/No/Not Given assesses the writer’s views or claims, which is a different task.
Step-by-step solving method
- Read the entire statement. Identify exactly what must be proved, including qualifiers such as all, some, only, before, more than.
- Locate the relevant part of the passage. Names, dates and distinctive nouns may help you scan. Expect paraphrases rather than identical vocabulary.
- Compare the meaning. Does the passage support the entire statement, contradict it, or leave it unresolved?
- Choose NOT GIVEN only after checking the relevant context. Missing evidence is not the same as evidence of the opposite.
- Review the proof. Explain which sentence supports your choice. Move on rather than rereading the entire passage repeatedly.
Original practice: learn to justify every answer
Practice passage (original): “The city library opened its new study hall in March. Visitors can use the hall until 8 p.m. on weekdays. The library also introduced a booking system for group rooms. The report did not evaluate visitors’ satisfaction.”

Practice 2: Look beyond matching words
Original practice passage: “Riverside Museum introduced weekend guided tours in April. Each tour lasts 45 minutes, and advance booking is recommended but not required. The tours are free for visitors under 16, while adults pay a small fee. An online survey about the tours is planned for December; no survey findings have been released.”

Common reasons students lose marks
- Choosing TRUE because a repeated keyword appears without checking the claim.
- Choosing FALSE when the passage is simply silent about a detail.
- Ignoring important qualifiers such as “always” or “only”.
- Making a decision from outside knowledge instead of passage evidence.
- Reading the entire passage repeatedly instead of locating and understanding relevant evidence.

False means the passage contradicts the statement. Not Given means the passage does not establish whether it is true or false.

No. IELTS requires you to decide based on the passage, not information you happen to know.
