Major 2026 change: student work is no longer generally unlimited

For Bachelor and Master students whose higher-education residence permits were granted on or after 11 June 2026, the general limit is 15 hours per week during semesters. More work is allowed in June, July and August and in certain study-related situations.

BANGLADESH ELIGIBILITY

Sweden has unusually clear Bangladesh-specific national admission guidance.

UniversityAdmissions.se publishes country instructions for both Bachelor and Master applications.

HSC

Bangladesh HSC meets general Bachelor eligibility.

Higher Secondary Certificate Examination is accepted for general Bachelor eligibility, subject to program-specific requirements.

Other secondary

Alim, vocational and technical credentials can also qualify.

University Admissions lists Alim, Vocational HSC, Pre-University and various diploma credentials among accepted general-entry documents.

Math

Post-2009 applicants need a passing Mathematics grade.

If HSC does not contain passing Mathematics, a passing SSC Mathematics grade can be used for basic eligibility.

Masters

Usually a 4-year Bachelor is the minimum.

A 4-year Bachelor, or Bachelor + Master totaling 4 years, meets the general Master’s degree-length requirement. Some 3-year honours degrees in social sciences/humanities can be considered.

3-year Bachelor

Without honours usually does not qualify for Master’s.

University Admissions explicitly says a 3-year Bachelor without honours does not meet Sweden’s general Master’s entry requirement.

English

Bangladesh upper-secondary English is not enough by itself.

For Master’s applications, Bangladesh upper-secondary study does not meet Sweden’s English requirement. Applicants generally need an accepted test or other approved proof.

UNIVERSITYADMISSIONS.SE

Most international applications run through one national admissions platform.

Application fee

Most non-EU/EEA applicants pay SEK 900 per semester application, covering all selected programs/courses in that semester.

Ranking matters

Your order of preference can affect your result. Sweden’s application system is not simply “apply independently to everything.”

Autumn 2027 international round

Applications open 16 October 2026, close 15 January 2027, with fee/supporting documents due 1 February.

IELTS · TOEFL · ENGLISH

English requirements are national + program-specific.

UniversityAdmissions.se defines general English requirements and accepted proof, while individual programs can require higher levels.

Bangladesh applicants

Bangladesh upper-secondary education does not itself meet the English requirement for Master’s admission, so accepted test evidence is usually needed unless another exemption applies.

Swedish-taught programs

Programs taught in Swedish require Swedish-language eligibility. Most international students use the English-taught catalogue.

MONEY & MAINTENANCE

The 2026 residence-permit maintenance requirement is SEK 10,656 per month.

2026 maintenance

StudentSEK 10,656 / month
Spouse / cohabiting partner+ SEK 4,440 / month
Each child+ SEK 2,664 / month
Free housing reductionSEK 4,736 / month
Free food reductionSEK 2,960 / month

Private family money must usually become your own accessible funds.

The Migration Agency does not treat private relatives as formal “sponsors” in the same way as universities/established organisations. Money from relatives should generally be transferred into an account in your name that you can access.

TUITION

Non-EU/EEA Bachelor and Master students generally pay tuition.

Program-specific fees

Swedish tuition varies substantially by university and subject. Humanities/social-science programs can be lower, while architecture, design, technology and specialised programs can be much higher.

Pay before permit

For tuition-paying higher-education students, the first tuition instalment generally needs to be paid before the residence-permit process can move forward.

Doctoral study

Doctoral applicants are generally exempt from application and tuition fees and often hold employment-style doctoral positions.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Bangladesh is represented in the Swedish Institute scholarship system.

SI Scholarship for Global Professionals

Competitive fully funded Master’s scholarship for eligible countries and eligible programs. Bangladesh appears among eligible citizenships for the 2026/27 program catalogue.

University scholarships

KTH, Lund, Uppsala, Chalmers, Gothenburg, Stockholm and other universities offer their own tuition scholarships with separate criteria.

Doctoral funding

PhD study in Sweden is often structured as paid employment rather than self-funded tuition study, depending on the position and institution.

RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

Sweden’s student process is a residence-permit process, not a classic Visa D journey.

01

Apply through UniversityAdmissions.se

Select and rank programs, pay the SEK 900 application fee where required and submit country-specific documents.

02

Admission decision

Receive your admissions result and follow the university’s instructions.

03

Pay tuition instalment

Fee-paying students normally need to pay the required first instalment before applying for the study residence permit.

04

Prepare maintenance & insurance

Show funds for the permit period and comprehensive health insurance where required based on the length of stay/population registration.

05

Apply to the Migration Agency

The 2026 application fee is SEK 1,500 for adults and SEK 750 for children under 18.

06

Passport / biometrics / residence card

Follow instructions from the Migration Agency and Swedish mission for passport checks, fingerprints and residence-permit card where required.

07

Decision

First-time applicants normally need the residence permit decision before travelling to begin long-term study.

08

Arrival & population registration

Students staying at least one year should investigate Swedish population registration and personal identity-number requirements after arrival.

DOCUMENTS · BANGLADESH

Sweden separates admissions documents from residence-permit evidence.

Bachelor admission

HSC/Alim/eligible technical-vocational certificate and official marks/transcripts issued by the relevant education board, plus required English and program-specific documents. School-issued copies alone may not meet country-document rules.

Master’s admission

Bachelor/Master degree certificates and transcripts, English evidence and any program-specific CV, statement, references or prerequisites. The degree-length rules for Bangladesh must be met.

Residence permit

Passport, final admission, tuition-payment evidence where applicable, maintenance evidence, insurance where required and other information requested in the Migration Agency e-service.

Financial evidence

Own bank assets, scholarship, qualifying student grant/loan, permitted formal sponsor support or employment income can be combined. Private-relative money should normally be accessible in your own account.

Translations

Follow University Admissions and Migration Agency language/translation rules. Certified translations can be required when documents are not in accepted languages.

SPOUSE & FAMILY

Family can accompany higher-education students, but 2026 rules tightened.

Who counts as family?

For student-family permits, this generally includes spouse, registered/cohabiting partner and children under 18.

Extra maintenance

For 2026, add SEK 4,440/month for a spouse or partner and SEK 2,664/month for each child to the student maintenance calculation.

Health insurance change

From 1 October 2026, family members staying in Sweden for a maximum of one year need comprehensive health insurance.

Adult family members can work

Where family members are granted permits connected to higher-education study, adult family members generally have work rights under the applicable permit conditions.

WORK WHILE STUDYING · 2026 RULES

The general rule is now 15 hours per week during semesters.

15 hours / week

For relevant Bachelor/Master study permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, paid work is generally limited to 15 hours per week during semesters.

June, July, August

The weekly limitation does not apply in the same way during these summer months under the new rules.

Study-related exceptions

Internships that form part of education, student representation/administration and certain university research/artistic work can fall under exceptions.

Overworking can affect your permit

The Migration Agency warns that exceeding permitted hours can lead to permit withdrawal or refusal of an extension.

HEALTHCARE & INSURANCE

Whether you join the Swedish population register changes your healthcare setup.

Stay shorter than one year

Comprehensive health insurance is normally required because you may not be population-registered.

Stay one year or longer

Students who qualify for population registration can gain access to Swedish healthcare under the ordinary resident framework after registration.

AFTER STUDY

Sweden gives graduates time to look for work or start a business.

FROM STUDENT TO WORK PERMIT

You can switch inside Sweden if the conditions are met.

Employment contract

Former students can apply for a work permit from within Sweden when they meet the required study history and have a qualifying signed employment contract.

Employment conditions

Salary and conditions must meet Swedish collective-agreement/common-practice standards, and required employer insurance must be in place.

Special first-work-permit rule

The Migration Agency currently states that students/researchers applying for their first work permit from this status are exempt from the standard work-permit salary threshold, though later extensions may be subject to it.

CITIES

Housing availability can matter as much as university ranking.

Stockholm

Largest labour market with KTH, Stockholm University, Karolinska and many companies. Housing is difficult and expensive.

Gothenburg

Chalmers, University of Gothenburg, automotive, life science and maritime industries.

Lund / Malmö

Strong student/research region with access to the wider Öresund economy.

Uppsala

Major university city close to Stockholm with strong life science and research environment.

Linköping

Technology and engineering ecosystem with comparatively smaller-city living.

Umeå

Northern university city with design, sustainability, healthcare and research strengths.

ARRIVAL

After the permit, practical registration determines how smoothly life starts.

Before departure

Passport, residence-permit decision/card where applicable, admission, tuition evidence, housing, insurance and key financial documents.

University arrival

Complete enrolment, orientation, student account, timetable and international-office registration.

Population registration

If your planned residence is at least one year and you meet the requirements, apply to be entered in the Swedish Population Register and receive a personal identity number.

Working

Understand the 15-hour rule before accepting work and make sure employment does not interfere with required academic progress.
