IELTS Preparation from Zero: Where Should You Start?
If you're starting IELTS without a clear plan, begin by understanding your exam, checking your actual skills, and practising a little every day. You do not need to buy multiple books or memorize complicated templates on day one.

Step 1. Choose the correct IELTS test
Understand whether your institution, employer or immigration route requires Academic or General Training. Confirm that requirement with the organization accepting your result, rather than assuming one format suits everyone. Read the official IELTS test-type information.
Step 2. Establish your starting level
Complete a timed sample of Listening and Reading, write a Task 2 response, and record a short Speaking answer. Record what you can and cannot do reliably. One initial mock is a diagnostic, not your final potential.
Step 3. Learn the four skills and their task types
- Listening: practise predicting answers, directions, spelling and word limits. Free Listening strategy lesson.
- Reading: practise main ideas, matching information and understanding what the question actually asks. Matching Headings guide.
- Writing: learn task requirements, relevance, organization and precise grammar. Task 2 idea generation guide.
- Speaking: practise clear extended responses without memorized scripts. Cue Card guide.

Step 4. Build a realistic weekly routine
Example beginner schedule
- Day 1: Reading question type and error review.
- Day 2: Listening practice with answer checks and spelling.
- Day 3: Writing planning and one short response.
- Day 4: Speaking recording and pronunciation review.
- Day 5: Your weakest task and targeted practice.
- Day 6: Timed mixed practice and mistake analysis.
- Day 7: Review progress, rest as needed and set the next target.
This is an adaptable example, not a promise that seven days is enough to achieve a particular band.
Step 5. Review mistakes, not just scores
After each practice session, classify errors: misunderstood instructions, vocabulary or grammar gaps, timing, listening detail, or inaccurate writing. Improving a specific cause is more useful than repeating the same test without review.
Should you self-study or take a course?
Self-study can work if you understand the exam, follow a consistent routine and can get reliable feedback, particularly for Speaking and Writing. A teacher may help when you cannot identify your own errors or need structured accountability. Choose based on your needs and verified teaching quality, not a guaranteed-score advertisement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I prepare from zero in one month?
Progress depends on your starting English ability, target band, consistency and feedback. A month may support meaningful progress, but no fixed timeline guarantees a specific band.
IELTS er jonno grammar koto ta dorkar?
Grammar matters for accurate Writing and Speaking and helps you interpret meaning in Reading and Listening. Focus on useful sentence structures rather than memorizing disconnected rules. Start with LizOn's sentence-building lesson.
Should I practise mock tests every day?
No fixed daily mock requirement exists. Combine timed tests with targeted learning and detailed mistake review so practice addresses the weaknesses you discover.
