Major 2026 update: students can now work up to 20 hours/week and stay 1 year after graduation

Law 5275/2026 amended Greece’s Migration Code. Student residence permit holders can work part-time outside study hours for up to 20 hours per week. After successful completion, qualifying graduates can obtain an H.11 residence permit for one year to search for employment or establish a business.

BANGLADESH ELIGIBILITY

There is no single Greece-wide HSC percentage or CGPA threshold.

Bachelor and Master admission routes differ, and recognition for further study is often handled directly by the Greek university.

English Bachelor

A recognised high-school diploma can support direct application.

Study in Greece states that international English-taught Bachelor programmes generally require a high-school diploma/equivalent, transcript, passport and B2-or-higher English proof, with programme-specific selection on top.

Greek Bachelor

Greek-taught public Bachelor admission uses a special foreign-student route.

Foreign candidates apply through the national Ministry process and submit translated/certified school documents plus a certificate confirming correspondence of the school-leaving qualification.

Masters

You normally apply directly to the Greek university.

For Master or PhD study, DOATAP says you do not first need an individual DOATAP academic-equivalence decision. The Greek university assesses the foreign degree against the national registries.

DOATAP

Academic recognition is still important for other purposes.

DOATAP remains Greece’s national academic-recognition body for cases where formal equivalence is legally required, such as certain public-sector or professional contexts.

English

B2 is a common baseline, not a national IELTS number.

English-taught programmes determine accepted IELTS/TOEFL or equivalent proof. Medical and other competitive programmes can add interviews or exams.

Greek language

Greek-taught degrees require Greek proficiency.

For Greek-language study, the required Greek certification and admission procedure depend on the programme and foreign-student category.

GREEK HIGHER EDUCATION

Public universities dominate Greece, but the landscape is changing.

Public universities

Greece has 24 state-funded universities with more than 1,000 undergraduate programmes, mostly taught in Greek.

International English degrees

A growing number of public universities now offer dedicated English-taught Bachelor and Master programmes aimed at international students.

Colleges / non-public study

College and non-public higher-education routes have different legal and immigration categories. Verify the exact institution and residence-permit basis before paying tuition.

Degree length

Most Bachelor degrees are 4 years; engineering and several professional fields can be 5 years, while medicine is generally 6 years.

English-taught degrees

Study in Greece says B2-level English or higher is commonly required. IELTS/TOEFL acceptance and exact scores remain programme-specific.

Greek-taught degrees

Greek-language proficiency is required for the ordinary Greek-taught university route. This can significantly widen low-tuition options.

MONEY & SUFFICIENT RESOURCES

Older €400 guidance is outdated for current residence planning.

The updated ministerial framework and current University of Athens residence guidance use €650/month for students. However, the Bangladesh GVCW D-visa page still displays the older €400 figure, so applicants should prepare to the higher current residence standard.

TUITION

Greek-taught public Bachelor study can be free, while international English degrees charge tuition.

Study in Greece planning ranges

Erasmus Mundus and mobility scholarships can be relevant for selected joint Master and exchange programmes.

SPOUSE & FAMILY

An ordinary Greek student permit does not create a standard dependant residence route.

Ordinary H.1 student

Current University of Athens immigration guidance states that family members of an ordinary student generally cannot obtain Greek family-reunification residence permits solely from the student’s status.

Short visits

Family can use the ordinary visitor/Schengen route where eligible, normally up to 90 days under the applicable short-stay rules.

Special categories differ

Researchers, medical-specialty permit holders and certain other categories can have different family rights. Do not apply those rules automatically to ordinary Bachelor/Master students.

WORK WHILE STUDYING · 2026 LAW

Student residence permit holders can work up to 20 hours per week.

20 hours/week maximum

Law 5275/2026 caps student part-time employment at 20 hours per week.

Outside study hours

Employment must remain part-time and take place outside the scheduled study programme.

Greek labour and tax rules apply

Working students need the normal tax and social-security setup, including the relevant AFM and AMKA/employment registrations.

Current student work guidance ↗
HEALTH INSURANCE & AMKA

Insurance is mandatory for residence, while employment can activate social-security coverage.

Residence permit insurance

Students must show acceptable private, university or other qualifying health-insurance coverage for the study residence permit.

AMKA

International students can obtain an inactive AMKA. Once employed and paying social-security contributions, the number can be activated for health and employment services.

Graduates can remain for one year to find work or build a business.

H.11 graduate residence permit

Current graduate-route guidance ↗
WORK & LONG-TERM STAY

The H.11 permit is a bridge into a proper employment or business residence status.

Dependent employment

Graduates can move from H.11 into the relevant employed-worker residence category when they obtain qualifying employment.

Highly skilled employment

EU Blue Card and other highly skilled routes can apply where qualification, contract and salary conditions are satisfied.

Entrepreneurship

The 2026 law explicitly permits the graduate H.11 route to be used while developing an eligible business project.

Long-term residence

Permanent/long-term residence is separate and depends on qualifying legal residence, integration and other requirements. A Greek degree alone does not guarantee it.
