Do not confuse Austria’s D visa with the Residence Permit Student

Bangladeshi students planning to study in Austria for more than six months generally need the Residence Permit Student first. The initial residence-permit application must be submitted personally at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi. A Visa D is then used for entry after the Austrian residence authority approves the permit.

BANGLADESH ELIGIBILITY

Austria does not publish one national Bangladesh HSC or CGPA cut-off.

Admission is decided by the individual Austrian higher-education institution.

Bachelor

An equivalent secondary-school qualification is the baseline.

For non-EU applicants, Austrian universities generally require a secondary-school leaving certificate considered equivalent and sufficient for university entrance. The institution decides equivalency.

Home-country access

The certificate should support higher-education access.

Universities may examine whether your Bangladesh qualification gives access to the intended type of study and can prescribe supplementary examinations where substantial differences exist.

Masters

A relevant Bachelor of at least 180 ECTS-equivalent is normally required.

The university assesses degree level, subject relevance, credits, grades and language. There is no Austria-wide Bangladesh CGPA threshold.

Fachhochschule

UAS admission can be more practice-oriented.

Universities of applied sciences accept general university entrance qualifications or relevant professional qualifications and normally use their own entrance process.

Language

German dominates Bachelor study.

Most Austrian programmes are German-taught, while the number of English-taught programmes is growing, especially at Master level.

Entrance exams

Competitive programmes can close much earlier.

Medicine, dentistry, psychology, architecture, business, computer science and arts programmes can use entrance examinations or selection procedures.

RESIDENCE PERMIT STUDENT · BANGLADESH

For study over six months, the residence application comes before the entry visa.

01

Admission

Obtain admission or conditional admission from the Austrian institution.

02

Prove the age-based funds for 12 months, plus any extra housing and insurance amount.

03

Accommodation

Show a legal claim to suitable accommodation, such as a rental or student-housing agreement.

05

Apply in New Delhi

Austrian authority decides

The Embassy forwards the application to the competent residence authority in Austria. Applicants normally wait abroad for the decision.

07

Residence Permit Student

€218 for applications submitted from 1 January 2026. The full application fee is paid at submission and is not refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn.

Visa D

Visa D is a separate entry step after residence approval for long-term students. The Bangladesh VFS fee schedule and local BDT equivalent should be checked at the time of submission.

Translations, legalisation, police certificates, insurance, VFS/service fees and document handling can add to the official permit fee.

DOCUMENTS · BANGLADESH

Austria expects originals, legalisation where required and consistent academic/residence evidence.

Academic admission

SSC/HSC or previous degree certificates and transcripts, passport, language evidence and programme-specific documents. The university can request supplementary evidence or entrance examinations.

Residence permit

Passport, biometric photo, admission, financial proof, accommodation, all-risk health insurance and other documents requested by the New Delhi Embassy/Austrian residence authority.

Funds

The applicant’s account should normally be accessible from Austria and the authority can ask for proof of origin, including recent bank history, sponsor bank statements, employment, scholarship, loan or sale/inheritance documentation.

Police clearance

A recent police clearance, generally not older than three months at application, can be required for first residence applications.

Legalisation / translation

The New Delhi Embassy states that required documents must be legalised and documents not in German need certified German translations for the residence process.

SPOUSE & FAMILY

Student family reunification is possible through a separate Family Community permit.

Eligible family

Spouse, registered partner and unmarried minor children can qualify. Spouses/registered partners must generally be at least 21 when applying.

Family finances

For 2026, couples need €2,064.12/month together, plus €201.88/month for each child, with extra housing costs above the threshold added.

Work is not automatic

A family member who wants salaried employment needs the appropriate labour-market authorisation. The relevant permit is employer-specific and may involve an AMS labour-market check.

Austria temporary residence / family rules ↗
WORK WHILE STUDYING

Students can work up to 20 hours/week, but the employer needs the permit.

20 hours/week

Third-country students can receive an employment permit for up to 20 hours per week without a labour-market test.

Employer applies to AMS

The prospective employer, not the student alone, applies for the Beschäftigungsbewilligung through Austria’s Public Employment Service.

Study remains primary

Employment must not jeopardise the main residence purpose: successful study.

Study progress matters at renewal

Residence-permit extensions require proof of study success or academic progress.

HEALTH INSURANCE

All-risk health insurance is required for the residence permit.

Before / during residence application

You need coverage valid in Austria and covering all risks. A short travel-only policy may not satisfy the long-term requirement.

Student self-insurance

Eligible students can use the preferential ÖGK student self-insurance. The 2026 contribution is €78.84 per month.

EU Blue Card

Highly qualified graduates can also use Austria’s EU Blue Card route where the job and salary requirements are met.

Permanent residence

Long-term residence is a separate legal pathway based on qualifying settlement history and integration requirements. A degree alone does not guarantee it.

CITIES

Vienna has the biggest market, but Austria’s regional university cities can reduce living costs.

Vienna

Largest concentration of universities, English-taught programmes and graduate employers, with higher housing costs.

Graz

Strong engineering, technology, research and student ecosystem with TU Graz, University of Graz and FH Joanneum.

Innsbruck

Research university city with tourism, life science and alpine-region strengths; housing can still be expensive.

Linz

Industrial, technology and digital-economy centre around Johannes Kepler University and applied institutions.

Salzburg

Humanities, music, tourism and selected science programmes in a smaller high-cost city.

Klagenfurt

Smaller university environment with technology, business and lower-scale city living.
