BANGLADESH ELIGIBILITY

Japan’s national baseline is years of education, then the institution decides academic selection.

Bachelor

12 years of formal education is the standard university-entry rule.

Japan’s official guidance requires completion of 12 years of formal schooling or an accepted equivalent route for undergraduate, junior-college and professional-training-college admission.

Bangladesh

Check your exact school pathway if your education totals under 12 years.

Japan’s official international-student guide specifically notes Bangladesh among countries where some applicants may have completed only 10 or 11 years and may therefore need additional higher education or a designated preparatory course before university entry.

HSC

SSC and HSC usually form the core Bangladesh school record.

Universities review certificates, transcripts, subjects, grades and sometimes EJU, interview or their own entrance examination.

Masters

Graduate entry normally requires 16 years of education or an accepted equivalent.

The graduate school decides whether the Bachelor degree, research background, grades and field match satisfy admission.

Japanese-taught

JLPT and EJU can both matter.

Official Study in Japan guidance says Japanese-taught university applicants are commonly expected to hold JLPT N1 or N2 and at least 250 points in the Japanese section of EJU, but the university’s own criteria control.

English-taught

Japan has a growing English-degree portfolio.

English-taught programmes set their own IELTS, TOEFL or other language evidence and often do not require JLPT for admission.

Official university eligibility guidance ↗
JAPANESE HIGHER EDUCATION

University is only one route. Japan also has strong technical and professional sectors.

Universities

Four-year Bachelor study is standard, with longer professional programmes in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and selected fields.

Junior colleges

Usually two or three years, often more professionally focused.

Professional training colleges · Senmon Gakko

Specialised vocational higher education in IT, business, design, hospitality, automotive, animation, care and many other fields.

Colleges of Technology · KOSEN

Engineering and technology-oriented institutions with distinctive admission structures, including third-year transfer routes for some international students.

Japanese language schools

Language institutions can prepare students for JLPT, EJU and later higher education, but they are not the same as a degree route.

Graduate schools

Master, doctoral and professional graduate programmes often involve faculty contact, research proposals or entrance examinations.

UNIVERSITY EXPLORER

Compare Tokyo, STEM and regional universities separately.

The University of Tokyo

Tokyo · flagship national research university across science, engineering, humanities, law, economics and medicine.

Official ↗

INTAKES

April remains the traditional main intake. September and October are increasingly common for international programmes.

Main intakeAprilLargest Japanese-taught university intake.
International programmesSep / OctCommon at English-medium Bachelor and graduate programmes.
Language schoolsMultipleJanuary, April, July and October are common.
Best ruleApply earlyAdmission, COE and VFS visa stages require significant lead time.
JLPT · EJU · IELTS · TOEFL

Language determines not only admission, but how wide your programme and job market becomes.

Japanese-taught Bachelor

JLPT N1 or N2 plus EJU is a common benchmark in official guidance, but each university sets the actual threshold.

English-taught degrees

IELTS and TOEFL requirements vary by programme. Japanese may not be required for admission but remains valuable for internships and graduate employment.

Professional training colleges

Japanese-language competence is usually much more important because vocational teaching and workplace training are commonly delivered in Japanese.

MONEY & FINANCIAL EVIDENCE

Japan does not publish one Bangladesh-wide fixed student bank balance on the Embassy study checklist.

What the visa file must show

Living costsCredibly funded
Sponsor relationshipDocumented

The COE stage is where finances are often scrutinised first.

The Japanese school normally submits the Certificate of Eligibility application to immigration and can request bank statements, sponsor income/tax records and relationship evidence before filing.

For Japanese-language-school applicants from Bangladesh, the Embassy’s published checklist specifically asks for six months of the financial supporter’s bank statements, three years of tax certificate/payment evidence and family relationship documents where the supporter is not a parent.
REALISTIC LIVING COST

Japan’s official student survey gives a national average of about ¥105,000 per month excluding tuition.

Current planning figures

National monthly average¥105,000
Average rent¥41,000
Tokyo average rent¥57,000
TuitionAdditional

Tokyo is not the only viable option.

Regional Japan can reduce rent substantially while still offering high-quality national universities, research institutes and graduate employment markets.

Official living-cost guidance ↗
TUITION

National universities remain one of Japan’s strongest value propositions.

National university · first year

Study in Japan currently gives a combined first-year academic-fee average of about ¥820,000.

Local public university · first year

Approximately ¥910,000 for undergraduate study.

Private university · first year

About ¥1.3 million on average outside medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.

Graduate school

First-year averages are around ¥820,000 national, ¥900,000 public and ¥1.1 million private.

Professional training college

Average first-year academic costs are around ¥1.3 million.

Japanese language institutions

Current official first-year ranges are roughly ¥610,000 to ¥1.9 million, depending on school and course.

MEXT & JASSO · BANGLADESH

Bangladesh has direct access to Japan’s flagship government scholarship route.

MEXT 2027 · Bangladesh

The Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh has already completed the 2027 Embassy Recommendation cycle for Research, Undergraduate, KOSEN and Specialized Training College categories.

Undergraduate MEXT

The 2027 undergraduate guideline provides ¥117,000 per month, tuition/entrance fee exemption and qualifying airfare support.

Graduate MEXT

Current MEXT support is approximately ¥143,000 non-degree, ¥144,000 Master and ¥145,000 doctoral per month, plus tuition exemption.

JASSO Honors Scholarship

Privately financed international students can receive ¥48,000 per month at undergraduate/graduate level or ¥30,000 at Japanese-language schools, subject to eligibility and nomination.

COE + STUDENT VISA · BANGLADESH

The Certificate of Eligibility normally comes before the visa application.

01

Admission

Receive acceptance from the Japanese university, graduate school, professional college or language institution.

02

School prepares COE file

The institution usually acts as your proxy in Japan and collects the academic, sponsor and financial evidence needed for the Certificate of Eligibility.

03

Immigration issues COE

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency examines the intended study, financial capacity and institutional application before issuing the COE.

04

Prepare Bangladesh visa file

Passport, visa form, photo, COE, acceptance, academic certificates and supporting finance/tuition documents according to the current Embassy/VFS checklist.

05

Submit through VFS Dhaka

Ordinary Japan visa applications are submitted through VFS Global, Delta Life Tower, Gulshan 2. The Embassy no longer receives routine applications directly.

06

Visa examination

The standard earliest processing target is seven working days for a complete application, but complex cases can take substantially longer.

07

Enter Japan

At major ports of entry, qualifying medium/long-term residents receive a residence card when landing permission is granted.

08

Register your address

After establishing your residence, complete municipal resident registration and the linked health-insurance setup.

DOCUMENTS · BANGLADESH

Japan’s file is split between the COE stage and the Bangladesh visa stage.

College / university visa file

Visa application, passport, photo, COE, acceptance letter where applicable, original academic certificates, resume, financial capability evidence, tuition/payment/remittance evidence and travel booking as requested by the current checklist.

Japanese language school file

COE, admission certificate, tuition receipt, JLPT/language evidence where available, SSC/HSC records, six months of supporter bank statements, three years of supporter tax evidence and relationship documents.

COE finance

The school may request sponsor bank balance/history, income/tax records, employment/business evidence and relationship documentation before submitting the COE application in Japan.

Academic consistency

Your stated study plan, past education, language preparation and source of funding should form one consistent story across admission, COE and visa documents.

SPOUSE & FAMILY

University-level students can potentially bring a spouse and child under Dependent status.

Eligible dependants

Japan’s Dependent residence status covers a spouse or child who is financially supported by a person holding Student status, subject to the immigration requirements.

Japanese language school warning

The Immigration Services Agency specifically states that a student studying at a Japanese language institution is not eligible to invite family under Dependent status.

Work is not automatic

A dependant who wants paid work needs separate permission for activities outside their status and must remain within the conditions of that permission.

Japan Dependent residence status ↗
WORK WHILE STUDYING

The standard student work ceiling is 28 hours per week, but permission comes first.

28 hours/week

International students with the required permission can work up to 28 hours per week while classes are in session.

Long school holidays

During designated long school vacations, students can work up to 8 hours per day.

Apply before working

Student status itself does not permit employment. Obtain Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted before starting paid work.

Prohibited work

Work connected with adult-entertainment businesses is prohibited even if the role itself appears unrelated to entertainment.

Students entering Japan for the first time with a stay longer than three months can often apply for the general part-time-work permission at the port of entry when landing permission is granted.
Official part-time work rules ↗
NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE

Students staying in Japan for more than three months generally join National Health Insurance.

Municipal registration

After registering your address, apply for National Health Insurance at your local municipal office.

Premium reductions

Premiums depend on prior-year income, and low-income students may qualify for reductions when they properly declare their income.

AFTER STUDY · DESIGNATED ACTIVITIES

Eligible graduates can normally continue job hunting for up to one year.

Graduate job-hunting status

StatusDesignated Activities

Not every Student-status graduate qualifies automatically.

The ordinary route covers eligible graduates of Japanese universities, junior colleges and qualifying specialised training colleges who continue genuine job hunting. Japanese language school graduates are not included in the standard university graduate route.

Official post-study procedure ↗
WORK & LONG-TERM STAY

The graduate period is a bridge into a proper work status.

Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services

This is the main professional route for many international graduates in IT, engineering, business, finance, marketing, translation, planning and related occupations.

Designated Activities No. 46

Graduates of Japanese universities with advanced Japanese ability can access a broader range of roles where their university-level knowledge and Japanese language are meaningfully used.

Specified Skilled Worker

Some graduates move into sector-specific Specified Skilled Worker status after meeting the relevant skills and Japanese-language requirements.

Highly Skilled Professional / permanent residence

Long-term settlement depends on later work status, points, income, residence history and other legal requirements. A Japanese degree alone does not guarantee permanent residence.

CITIES

Tokyo has the biggest job market, but regional Japan can offer dramatically better value.

Tokyo

Largest concentration of universities, international companies, finance, technology and graduate recruitment. Highest housing pressure.

Osaka

Major business, manufacturing and service economy with a large international university ecosystem.

Kyoto

Research, technology, culture and strong universities, with a large student population.

Fukuoka

Fast-growing start-up and technology hub with lower living costs than Tokyo.

Sendai

Research and engineering-oriented regional city centred strongly around Tohoku University.

Nagoya

Automotive, manufacturing, engineering and technology hub with strong graduate employment.

ARRIVAL

Your first days establish your legal residence and health setup.

At the airport

Present passport, student visa and COE information. Qualifying medium and long-term residents receive a residence card at designated major airports.

Resident registration

Once your address is fixed, complete local municipal registration within the required legal period.

National Health Insurance

Register for NHI at the municipal office if you will stay more than three months and are not covered under another qualifying health scheme.

Before any part-time work

Confirm that Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted has been granted before starting the job.
